How do you know the DJ you hire will give you what you want?

The big day in your life coming up – the wedding and there are a thousand things to see to. Do remember that the DJ can make your wedding something to be remembered or not! When planning a wedding or any other party where you will have music and dancing, the DJ is often not given the attention it deserves.

The wedding ceremony might be perfect, the hall so beautifully decorated and the food delicious but what your guests will remember and what they look forward to when they come to a wedding is the music and the dancing. So if you are an Indian in Alberta planning your wedding, then all the more it’s essential that you get a DJ who has a playlist that includes Bollywood music and some Bhangra and they should know when to play it.

Before finalizing on a DJ, get to know them first by asking them these questions

Are you licensed in Alberta?
To play music, a DJ must be registered with some licensing body such as ADJA. If they are not it’s best to stay away from them.
Where are you located?
It is best if you choose a DJ who operates in the area where you will hold the wedding, since most charge travel costs too.
How much do you charge?
While it’s always great to get a good deal do remember that what you pay is what you get. Anything below $500 and it could be risky. It would be best if they don’t charge by the hour and it is a package deal. You might have to pay more if it is a “high demand” time – May to September and also Christmas and New Year. Also if the party extends would they mind playing for a while more. The usual time is 5 pm to 1 am and if they agree to an extension it would cost up to $100 an hour.
Do you have Bollywood music on your playlist?

Any wedding DJ in Alberta has clients from different ethnic backgrounds and so would be ready with a Bollywood playlist. Of course, if you can get an Indian DJ, there is nothing like it as they will know exactly what to play when. However, if not Indian, then you should provide the playlist and walk them through what to play when.
Will your system suit my venue?
The basic Disc Jockey system has at least two good speakers, a mixing board, a CD player or laptop. IF your venue is a large reception or a bigger hall then you might need a bigger system. This could just mean extra amplification or boosters added to the basic system and may not be a big price difference.

Choose a Disc Jockey who will set up before the event. You do not want them moving around with their paraphernalia while your guests are already in. It’s best to contact at least 3 companies by phone or email unless it’s a referral. Be sure to go with someone you are comfortable with and who gets exactly what you want. After all, it’s your big day and music will set the tone in getting your guests up and showing off their dance moves.
